Easy: one simple thing about the word (a letter, its length, a double letter). The CPU plays too: turns go CPU, then each guesser, then back.

So, what are you bringing to the island? The Island Game is the viral guess-the-rule party game from TikTok. One player keeps a secret rule for what is allowed on the island, and everyone else suggests things and tries to crack it. The game above is ready to play right now: take on the computer, or pass and play with friends.

Quick start

One player (or the computer) secretly picks a rule for what can come to the island, like "starts with B" or "is an animal." They start by naming one thing that fits. Then everyone takes turns asking "Can I bring a ___?" and the judge answers yes or no. Watch what makes it onto the island and what gets left behind, spot the pattern, and be the first to guess the secret rule. Play free against the computer, or pass and play with a group on one device.

What is the Island Game?

The Island Game is a guess-the-rule deduction game that went viral on TikTok and YouTube, often under names like "the island game" or "what can you bring to the island." It is a modern take on the classic "I'm going on a trip and I'm bringing..." game.

One person is the judge and secretly decides a rule for what is allowed on the island. The rule is usually about the word itself, like the first letter, the number of syllables, or a category such as animals or food. Everyone else suggests things and learns, one yes or no at a time, which items fit. The fun is in the slow reveal: as more things land on the island or get left behind, the pattern starts to click, and there is a great "aha" moment when someone finally cracks the rule.

It is a screen-free game at heart, which is part of why it travels so well to road trips, classrooms, and dinner tables. This version lets you play it online too, free, with no app and no signup.

How to play the Island Game

Step by step

  1. Pick a secret rule. One player is the judge and secretly decides what can come to the island. For example: the word starts with the letter B, has two syllables, or is a kind of animal.
  2. Give the first clue. The judge opens with "I'm going to the island and I'm bringing a ___" and names one thing that fits the rule. That is everyone's first clue.
  3. Take turns guessing. Going around the group, each player asks "Can I bring a ___?" The judge answers yes if it fits the rule, or no if it does not.
  4. Keep adding clues. Each time it comes back around to the judge, they name another thing that fits, so the list of things on the island keeps growing.
  5. Crack the rule. On your turn you can guess the rule instead of bringing something. The first player to guess the secret rule wins, then the judge role passes to the next player.

Playing against the computer (Vs CPU)

Prefer to play solo, or want the device to be the judge for your group? In Vs CPU mode the computer keeps the secret rule and plays along. It brings one thing that fits to start you off, then adds a fresh clue every round. On your turn you pick something to bring and the game sorts it for you: things that fit land on the island, everything else is left behind. When you think you have it, tap Guess the rule and build the rule you think it is. Stuck? You can give up and reveal the rule at any time.

Pass and play with friends

In Pass & Play mode a real person is the judge. The app helps the judge pick a fun rule (or make up their own) and keeps it secret, then gets out of the way so the round can move fast out loud. Everyone takes a turn as the judge, in order, so the whole group gets to play both sides.

Island Game rules

  1. One player is the judge and secretly picks a rule for what can come to the island.
  2. The judge always starts by naming one thing that fits the rule, as a first clue.
  3. Players take turns asking "Can I bring a ___?" The judge answers honestly: yes if it fits the rule, no if it does not.
  4. The judge should keep adding a new thing that fits every so often, so guessers always have clues to work with.
  5. On your turn you may guess the rule instead of bringing something. The first correct guess wins the round.
  6. The judge must apply the rule consistently. No changing the rule partway through.
  7. After someone wins, pass the judge role to the next player and start a new round.

50+ Island Game rule ideas

Stuck for a rule? Here are dozens of Island Game rule ideas, from easy to sneaky. Pick one and keep it secret. (Our Vs CPU and Pass & Play modes can also generate one for you.)

Tip: start with an easy rule and save the sneaky ones for players who have caught on. The best rules feel obvious in hindsight but take a few rounds to spot.

Fun ways to play

  • Couples and date night. With two people you take turns being the judge. Sneaky, personal rules make it extra fun, like "things we have at home" or "things from our first date."
  • Big group or party. Everyone on one device, going around the circle. The judge rotates each round so nobody is stuck just watching.
  • With kids and families. Start with easy rules like a starting letter or a category. It is a sneaky way to practice letters, sounds, and categories, and it needs no equipment, so it is perfect for car rides and waiting rooms.
  • Solo against the computer. No group? Play Vs CPU. The computer keeps the secret rule and drops a clue each round while you try to crack it in as few guesses as possible.
  • Make it a challenge. See who can crack the rule in the fewest tries, or who can stump the group with the trickiest rule.

Tips for judges and guessers

If you are the judge

  • Open with a clear example that obviously fits, so guessers have a real starting clue.
  • Drop a fresh clue every round to keep things moving.
  • Apply the rule the same way every time. Consistency is what makes the puzzle fair.
  • If everyone is stuck, choose your next clue to point them in the right direction.

If you are guessing

  • Bring opposites on purpose to test a theory. If you think it is "starts with S," try a word that does not, and see what happens.
  • Watch what gets left behind as closely as what gets in. The "no" pile is just as much of a clue.
  • Say your theory out loud before you commit. Sometimes a teammate spots the flaw.
