Timer Imposter

Timer Imposter is the imposter game played on a stopwatch instead of a word. Everyone is shown the same target time except one player, who is dealt IMPOSTER and never learns the number. Then every player runs the timer blind while the rest of the group listens, and you work out who was faking.

You will also see it called the imposter timer game, or the stopwatch imposter game. Same thing.

How is it different from the normal Imposter game?

In our word Imposter game, everyone gets the same secret word except the faker, and you take turns giving a one-word clue. Here the secret is a length of time, and your clue is a duration: you start and stop a hidden stopwatch, and all anyone hears is the beep at the start and the click at the stop. Same social deduction, no words at all.

How many players do you need?

Three at minimum, up to twelve, on one phone passed around. Two does not work, because there is nobody to compare the imposter against.

Do you need anything else?

No. It is free, there is no signup, and it runs in the browser. If you want the plain version without a faker, that is the Timer Game, where everyone knows the target and closest wins.

1. Pass the phone and look

Each player taps to see their own screen, remembers it, hides it, and passes on. Exactly like the word in Imposter, except the secret is a length of time.

2. Everyone takes a turn on the timer

In turn, each player starts and stops the timer, trying to land on the target. Nobody sees a number, including the person running it. All anyone gets is the beep at the start and the click at the stop, so the only evidence is how long it sounded.

The imposter has to run a timer for a number they were never told. Going first is brutal. Going last means you have heard everyone else and can try to match them.

3. Discuss

This is the game. Whoever sounded too long, too short, or too confident. The app does not collect a vote, you point at somebody like you would at a table.

4. Reveal

Tap reveal to see who the imposter was. You can then show everyone's actual times and see how close each person really got, or leave it a mystery and play again.

Why the clock stays hidden until the end

While the round is being played, nobody sees a number, not even the player running the timer. All you get is the beep at the start and the click at the stop, so everyone is judging by feel. That is where the imposter hides: with no numbers in front of you, somebody who ran a little long is hard to tell apart from somebody who had no idea what they were aiming at.

The times are not lost, they are just held back. Once the imposter has been revealed you can show every player's time and see who was actually closest. The order is the whole point. If you could see the numbers while you were deciding, you would not be deciding at all, you would be reading a scoreboard.
