15 Words or Less Game Generator: the TikTok Password Challenge | Game On Family

Quick start: Pass & Play

Pair up. The clue-giver holds the phone and sees one word at a time. Give your partner a one-word clue to get them to say it (the first clue on each word counts on its own). Tap Got it when they guess it, or Another clue when you need one more. Get all 8 before your 15 clues run out. Clues you didn't need are your spare words.

Quick start: Solo

The computer is the clue-giver. It shows one clue at a time; type your guess. Right, and the word turns green with a medal: gold for one clue, silver for two, bronze for three. Wrong, and you get the next clue. Every clue counts toward your 15, so stuck words cost you. Tap Skip word to give one up for free and move on.

How to play 15 Words or Less

15 Words or Less is the word guessing game from TikTok, also called the TikTok password challenge. One player is the clue-giver and the other is the guesser. The game above is the generator: it deals a list of 8 random words and counts every word the clue-giver says.

  1. The clue-giver holds the phone. The guesser doesn't look. The game shows one word at a time, in order, the way the TikTok videos go down the list.
  2. Give a one-word clue. Say it out loud. The first clue on each word is counted for you: one box of your 15 gets crossed off.
  3. The guesser answers. If they say the word, tap Got it and the next word comes up. If not, tap Another clue and give one more. Stuck? Skip word moves on.
  4. Keep going until the list is done or your clues run out. Then the game shows every word, guessed or missed.
  5. Your score is your spare words: the words left in your budget when the list is done. Clear 8 words in 12 clues and you finish with 3 spare words.

Play 15 Words or Less online by yourself

No partner? Tap Solo at the top and the computer becomes the clue-giver, so you can play 15 Words or Less online on your own.

  1. The computer gives one clue. It's the biggest word on the screen.
  2. Type your guess. One guess per clue. Small typos are fine.
  3. Right: the word turns green and you get a medal, gold for one clue, silver for two, bronze for three. Solve words on the first clue in a row for a hot streak.
  4. Wrong: the next clue appears, and your earlier clues and guesses stay listed underneath so you can see where you went off track.
  5. Every clue costs one of your 15. The boxes under the guess box count them down. Stuck on a word? Skip word gives it up for free and moves on.
  6. At the end, tap any word to see its clues and your guesses, then share your result. A shared result is a challenge: your friend gets the same 8 words and your score to beat.

Solo plays words from Food, Animals, Objects & Things, Vehicles & Transportation, Nature & Outdoors, and Jobs & Professions, with more on the way.

15 Words or Less rules

  • Every spoken word counts. The budget is shared across the whole list, not per word. If you slip and say "it's a kind of fruit", that's five words.
  • One-word clues. One word at a time, then let your partner guess.
  • No saying the word or part of it. For "snowman" you can't say "snow" or "man".
  • No gestures, no sounds, no spelling. Words only.
  • One guess per clue. After each clue the guesser gets one try. A wrong guess doesn't add to the count, but it's the clue-giver's turn again. Only the clue-giver's words count.
  • No timer. The budget is the pressure. If you want a clock too, turn one on in Settings.
  • In order. Clue the words top to bottom and stay on a word until it lands. If your group allows skipping, tap a later word when it's guessed and the game keeps up.

13 vs 15 vs 20 words or less

It's the same game every time. The only thing that changes is the budget, which is why Settings, right under the game, lets you pick the number.

  • 20 Words or Less: the easiest. About two and a half clues per word. Start here with kids, or with a partner you haven't played with before.
  • 15 Words or Less: the default, and the number most people play now. Under two clues per word, so you need a few one-clue guesses.
  • 13 Words or Less: for pairs who know each other well. You get only five clues more than the number of words.
  • 10 Words or Less: expert mode. Almost every word has to land on the first clue.
  • Custom: any budget you want, plus 10 words instead of 8, in Settings.

A good rule for families: let the youngest player pick the number, and drop it by one each time a pair clears the list.

Where the game comes from: Password and 25 Words or Less

Password (1961)

The one-word clue goes back to the TV game show Password, which premiered on CBS on October 2, 1961, hosted by Allen Ludden. Two teams, each a celebrity and a contestant, gave one-word clues to get their partner to say a secret word. A first-try guess was worth 10 points, and each extra clue made it worth less. The CBS daytime show ran until 1967.

Password kept coming back: on ABC from 1971 to 1975, as Password Plus on NBC from 1979 to 1982, as Super Password with Bert Convy from 1984 to 1989, as Million Dollar Password with Regis Philbin on CBS in 2008 and 2009, and on NBC in 2022 with Keke Palmer as host and Jimmy Fallon as a regular player. That's why so many people still call this the password game.

25 Words or Less (1996)

The word budget comes from 25 Words or Less, a board game published by Winning Moves in 1996. Players bid down from 25 on how few clue words they need to get their team to guess a set of words, and the lowest bidder has to prove it. It became a syndicated TV game show hosted by Meredith Vieira: a trial run on Fox stations in the summer of 2018, then a national premiere on September 16, 2019.

The TikTok challenge

Short-form video turned it into a pairs challenge: couples, siblings and friends filmed themselves trying to clear a list of 8 words with an on-screen word counter. The "20 words or less" videos took off in 2024. By late 2025 the number most creators used was 15, with a smaller "13 words or less" wave of themed lists like Disney villains and cartoons. The overlay on this page copies the one in the videos: the title, a numbered list, a big word counter, and a green check for every word guessed.

Clue-giver tips

  • Go for the strongest link first. For "Pizza", "pepperoni" beats "food".
  • Bank the easy ones. The budget is shared, so a one-clue guess early leaves room for the hard word later.
  • Use opposites and pairs. "Salt" gets "pepper". "Peanut butter" gets "jelly".
  • Build on the wrong guess. If they say "ocean" and the word is "beach", try "sand". Their guess is free information.
  • Know your partner. A shared memory ("Grandma") can land in one word where a definition would take five.
  • Change the angle. If a word isn't landing after two clues, stop adding to the same idea and come at it from a new direction.

15 Words or Less for kids and families

Age

Kids can guess from about six or seven, and give clues from about eight. The default is every category at Easy, a mix of everyday words that kids know: animals, food, colors, places, school and sports. Add Medium and Hard in Settings when they're ready.

Skills

  • Vocabulary: to find the one perfect word, you have to know a few.
  • Word association: the whole game is guessing what your partner will think of next.
  • Thinking before speaking: every word costs, so kids learn to pick their words.

Why we like it

It's cooperative, so nobody loses to anyone. It needs one phone and two people, and a round takes about two minutes. Put a kid in the clue-giver seat with a grown-up guessing: the clues they pick are half the fun.
