You can play the imposter game online with friends who are nowhere near you. Start a room, send one link, and everyone plays from their own device wherever they are. It is free, and nobody has to download anything.

How playing imposter online works

  1. Start a room

Open the game, switch to Online, and create a room. You get a link that belongs to that game.
  2. Send the link

Text it, paste it in a group chat, drop it in a Discord server, whatever your group already uses. Friends open it in any browser. No app, no account.
  3. Play from anywhere

Everyone sees their own secret word on their own screen, or finds out they are the imposter. Give clues, argue about it, and vote, exactly as you would around a table.

Why play the imposter game online here

That second one matters more than it sounds. Every imposter game in the app stores needs everyone in the group to download something before anyone can play, and a party dies while five people wait for an install to finish. Here one person starts a room and everybody else is one tap behind them. It also means it works on school and work machines where downloads are blocked.

Playing online versus in the same room

Both work, and they are the same game. If your group is together, the version on the main game page deals each player their word on a shared screen. If people are spread across cities, time zones, or just different rooms in one house, online is the one you want.

Playing over a video call works well too. Get everyone on the call, share the room link in the chat, and use the call for the part that matters, which is watching people's faces while they lie to you.

Frequently asked questions

Do my friends need to download an app?

No. You send them a link, they open it in any browser, and they are in. Nothing to install and no account to make, which also means it works on machines where downloads are blocked.

How many people can play imposter online?

At least three, and it is best with six to ten. Larger groups work too if you add more imposters.

Is playing imposter online free?

Yes. Starting a room and joining one are both free, with no signup.

Can you play the imposter game online with strangers?

Not here. Rooms are private and only the people you send the link to can join. That is deliberate, because this gets played by families and in classrooms.

Can we play in person instead?

Yes. The full guide covers playing in the same room, including how to run it on paper if you would rather not use screens at all.
